A candidate for citizenship by investment is expected to make a substantial financial contribution to the Austrian economy, such as via a joint venture or a direct investment in a company that expands exports or creates jobs. In general, substantial direct investment is needed. For example, passive investments in real estate or government bonds are not acceptable. All applicants must submit a thorough CV, detailed company history information, flawless references, and a certificate of no criminal record in addition to the usual documentary requirements (such as passports, birth certificates, and marriage certificates). The Austrian Citizenship Act typically stipulates that in order to be given Austrian citizenship, the applicant must renounce their current citizenship. However, if citizenship is granted in accordance with Article 10(6) of the Citizenship Act, the applicant may not be compelled to renounce their current citizenship, and the prior citizenship can be preserved legitimately.
