Qualification for the Canadian Experience Class (Express Entry)
The Canadian Experience Class is for talented workers with Canadian work experience who wish to immigrate permanently.
Minimum requirement:
You must;
- Fulfill the language proficiency requirements for your employment for each language ability
Writing Reading Listening Speaking
- Hold at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the previous three years; this criterion can be satisfied in a variety of ways.
- Full-time at one job: 30 hours per week for 12 months is one year of full-time employment (1,560 hours)
- An equal amount of part-time labor, such as 15 hours per week for 24 months, equals one year of full-time employment (1,560 hours)
- You are permitted to work as many part-time jobs as necessary to fulfill this criterion.
- Full-time employment at multiple jobs: 30 hours per week for 12 months at many jobs equals one full-time year (1,560 hours)
- Having acquired work experience by working in Canada while a temporary resident with work authorization
How IRCC compute employment experience
Your skilled work experience must include waged or commission-based employment. IRCC do not count unpaid internships or voluntary work. More or fewer than 15 hours per week are permissible for part-time work, so long as the total is 1,560 hours. You can work multiple part-time jobs to obtain the required number of hours to apply. IRCC do not account for hours worked in excess of 30 per week.
You do not qualify for the Canadian Experience Class if:
- You are a Canadian refugee claimant
- You are working without authorization, and your Canadian job experience was acquired without a temporary residence visa
According to the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC), competent work experience means:
- Managerial jobs (skill level 0)
- Professional employment (skill type A)
- Specialized employment and skilled trades (skill type B)
- Your work experience can include at least one NOC 0, A, or B occupation
You must demonstrate that you carried out the responsibilities outlined in the NOC’s lead statement of the occupation’s description. This contains all the essential duties and the majority of the stated primary duties.
Independent work and student work experience
Self-employment and job experience earned while enrolled as a full-time student (including co-op work terms) do not count toward the minimum criteria for this degree.
Education
There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class.
There are two ways to increase your standing in the Express Entry immigration pool.
- If you attended school in Canada, you could receive credit for a Canadian certificate, diploma, or degree: Secondary school (high school) or post-secondary school or
- If you have got a foreign education, you can score points for: a finished foreign credential and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an appointed agency demonstrating that your education is equivalent to a completed Canadian certificate, diploma, or degree: Secondary school or post-secondary institution
Language ability
You must:
Get Canadian Language Benchmark CBL 7 for NOC 0 or A positions, and Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for NOC B jobs, must be met.
Take certified language tests for:
- Writing Reading Listening Speaking
- Provide test results on your Express Entry profile
- The results of your language exam are valid for a period of two years beginning on the day that you took the test, and they must still be valid on the day that you apply for permanent residency

You must qualify for entry into Canada.
