If you have decided to enroll at an Australian university, you must apply for an Australian student visa. If you attend school full-time, you will require a Subclass 500 visa, which costs around $575 per application and must be applied for at least six weeks before the start of your course.

Procedure for the Australian student visa (subclass 500)

  • Be accepted for a full-time study program at an accredited college or university that may issue you a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) once you’ve agreed to it and paid the necessary fees.
  • Register and start the application online: Have your application-related documentation, such as your Certificate of Eligibility, readily available.
  • When you pay the fee associated with your application, you will obtain a transaction reference number.
  • You may be required to schedule a visa interview or health examination.
  • You will be informed of the result of your application and the reasons for denial in writing.
  • You must include the names of your spouse and children on your student visa application for them to be eligible to join you in Australia. Any dependent children must be under the age of 18 and unmarried. There is a cost for each family member accompanying you to Australia.
  • You should anticipate waiting between 6 and 11 weeks for your 500 visa approval. You must submit your visa application as soon as possible, as it can take several weeks to receive a response.
  • To enhance the likelihood that your visa application will be accepted in time, you should submit it at least three months before your departure date.
  • If you are in Australia on a subclass 500 student visa, you are permitted to work once your study has begun. You are permitted to work a limit of 40 hours every two weeks, but the number of hours you can work is limitless when school is not in session.

Australian student visa requirements

All application-related documents must be scanned in color and stored as PDFs. You may need official translations if the original documents are not in English. During the application process for an Australian student visa, you may be required to furnish the following:

  • Acceptance of enrollment (CoE)
  • A personal declaration in English (GTE requirement)
  • Overseas Student Medical Insurance (OSHC)
  • Biometric Police document
  • Evidence of financial means
  • English language certification
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. This is a personal statement proclaiming your purpose to study in Australia and your intention to depart upon the conclusion of your program. It should give the Australian government a comprehensive assessment of your circumstances and ties to your native country. If you include supporting documentation and the assertion, your application will be more robust.

Consider including the following in your GTE:

  • Previous research: where you have conducted research in the past and your outcomes.
  • Reasons for any educational gaps in your education.
  • Current employment information, together with the name and contact information of someone who can verify it. If appropriate, include any work offers upon completion of your study.
  • After completing your studies, you will wish to return to your family and friends.
  • Your financial circumstances: papers demonstrating employment before completing your application, including income tax returns, reports, and bank statements.

Health Insurance for students:

Australian law mandates health coverage. Students studying in Australia must have Overseas Student Health Coverage (OSHC). Coverage is available from various Australian healthcare providers and must be obtained before arrival. OSHC can be arranged through your selected university and provides coverage for primary medical care, such as doctor visits. You may wish to acquire a more comprehensive insurance plan during your time in Australia.
