Many overseas students studying in Hungary may need a residence permit to remain in the country long enough to complete their program. When you have been admitted to a university, you must contact the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate to learn the exact student visa process and requirements for your country. EU students studying in Hungary will only be required to register with the regional directorate of the Office of Immigration and Nationality if their stay exceeds ninety days.

Hungary visa process for Students

  • Accept an invitation to study at a university in Hungary.
  • Contact the nearest Hungary embassy or consulate to schedule an appointment for a type D visa (three months or less before your program starts)
  • Provide a completed application form, passport, biometrics, and a €60 application fee at the embassy or consulate.
  • Provide any required evidence of your educational background and financial stability.
  • Visa decisions may take up to a month to process.
  • Within 30 days, travel to Hungary and obtain your residence permit.

Requirements for a student visa and residency permit in Hungary

The following may be required when applying for a visa or residence permit to study in Hungary:

  • Letter of acceptance from the university
  • Evidence of any funds given to the University Tuition or housing
  • Passport
  • Evidence of financial means
  • Certified translations of academic transcripts
  • A score on an English language competency exam
  • Health coverage
  • Specifics about your lodging arrangements in Hungary
  • The processing time for a Hungarian student visa is typically one month, but it could take up to 60 days; therefore, it is crucial that you apply as soon as possible
  • If you have a university offer, you can apply for your visa up to six months before departure; thus, don’t wait until the last minute. Appointment times can be restricted, so you may need to give up to six weeks’ notice to schedule one
  • It might be tough for overseas students to find part-time employment in Hungary, as most positions need fluency in Hungarian
  • EU students may work without restriction in Hungary; however, international students from outside the EU must obtain a work permit
  • After establishing yourself in Hungary, you may be able to initiate the process for your spouse or children to join you there. The applicant should be able to support his family financially, and they must be eligible to enter Hungary under family reunification
