Student visas for South Africa are typically processed within six weeks. After receiving conditional admission from the South African institution of your choosing, you must complete the temporary residence permit application form BI-1738 and submit it in person to a South African embassy or consulate in your home country, together with the necessary documents:

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days following course completion
  • You must have two consecutive, blank pages in your passport for entry/departure stamps
  • Form BI-1738 filled out
  • Visa application payment receipt (R1,800/US$130)
  • Two passport-sized color pictures
  • Official confirmation letter from your chosen South African university outlining the duration of your study and committing to provide notice of registration/de-registration and course completion/extension within the specified timeframe
  • Documentation of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for the duration of your stay
  • Evidence of medical or health insurance and a letter stating that it will be renewed annually for the duration of your stay is required
  • Depending on your origin, you may also need a yellow-fever immunization certificate. South Africa is largely malaria-free; however, hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are recommended before arrival. Radiographic and medical reports during the past six months
  • Specifics of lodging arrangements in South Africa; If you’re under 18: Written authorization from both parents or a parent with sole custody, providing proof of sole custody; information of the person in South Africa who will function as your guardian, and a letter of confirmation from them
  • An individual over 18 is required to present a certificate of police clearance from any nation in which they have spent more than 12 months since turning 18
  • If you are traveling with or joining children (minors) in South Africa, you must produce proof of guardianship, custody, or consent from the guardian
  • South African student visas are valid for the entirety of the course for which they were issued.
  • Student visa holders are permitted to work no more than 20 hours a week part-time (and full-time during academic vacations). It is necessary to apply to the Department of Home Affairs if you want to work in order to finance your education or obtain job experience
  • You must provide an offer of practical training, permission from your educational institution in South Africa, and evidence that you are still enrolled as a student
