If you wish to study in Sweden for more than three months or are not a citizen of the EU or EEA, you must get a residence visa before departure. If you’re a citizen of the EU, the European Economic Area, or another Nordic nation, you can live and study in Sweden without any residence permit or visa. You must register with the Swedish Tax Agency if you intend to remain in Sweden for longer than 12 months. Switzerland citizens can travel to Sweden without a visa but must apply for a residence permit if they intend to remain for more than three months.

 

Student visa application procedure in Sweden

How to apply for a Swedish resident permit is as follows:

 

  • Accept an offer from a Swedish university: To be eligible for a residence permit, you must have been accepted into a program at a Swedish institution.
  • Make your initial tuition payment: You must have paid a portion of your tuition money before application submission.
  • Prepare your supporting paperwork: You must submit several supporting documents when you apply. The complete list of required documents is provided below.
  • Apply over the Internet: You can apply online for a residency permit. You must submit information about yourself and enclose any required documentation.
  • Pay the registration fee: When you apply online, you will pay the approximately $100 application cost by credit or debit card.
  • Visit your nearest embassy: If you are a citizen of a nation whose residents require a visa to enter Sweden, you must visit your nearest Swedish consulate to obtain a residency permission card.

 

 

Sweden student visa requirements

When applying for a Swedish residence visa, the following documents are required:

 

  • Copies of your passport with your personal information, its expiration date, and whether or not you have the authorization to reside in countries other than your place of origin.
  • Admission documentation from a Swedish higher education institution.
  • Copies of paperwork proving that you have Swedish health insurance.
  • Financial documents demonstrate that you have the finances to pay for your studies while in school.
  • If you’ve been awarded a scholarship, you must produce documentation that includes the amount and duration of your support.
  • These materials must be attached to your online application in pdf, doc, Docx, jpg, png, RTF, or txt format.
  • Sweden student visa financial requirements; the minimum monthly maintenance fee for applications submitted in 2020 is SEK 8,370, or approximately $860. You must demonstrate that you can cover this sum for the duration of your residence permit. As a grant or scholarship recipient, you must demonstrate that you have the monies in your bank account. The bank account is required to be in your name, or your name and the name of your spouse, and it should not be in the name of your family or some other person.
  • Timing of Swedish student visa processing; The Swedish Migration Agency decides whether your application is granted or denied, and it often takes between two and four months to receive a decision. The typical processing time for a study permit fluctuates over time. By responding to a few brief questions concerning your application, you can determine the latest time for a decision.
  • Employing a Swedish student visa; there are no particular limitations or restrictions on the number of hours an international student can work in Sweden. However, your education must always be your top priority, and you should never allow a job to interfere with your studies.
  • When applying to extend your permission, you must demonstrate your program’s advancement. If your academic performance suffers due to your employment, you may be unable to continue your studies in Sweden.
  • If you wish to live in Sweden after graduation, you can extend your visa for six months to look for work. Once you have a full-time job, you are eligible to apply for a work visa.
